He was sentenced to 6 years after killing his wife’s girlfriend
Istanbul, TURKEY, On January 4, 2005, Yasar Huseyin Yardimci who stabbed Yelda Yildirim (his wife’s girlfriend) to death was sentenced to 24 year in prison, but he was granted sentence reduction and his term was reduced to 6 years and 8 months because he was provoked in this ``lesbian murder``.
The trial took place at Istanbul No.2 multiple-judge court (multiple-judge courts are for serious criminal cases). During his verdict, the murderer Yasar Huseyin Yardimci was also present. When he was asked his last words before the verdict, he said `` I wish this wouldn’t have happened. I am sorry.``
Although Yasar Huseyin Yardimci was sentenced to 24 year prison for murdering, the court decreased this sentence because he committed this crime under provocation cause the victim was a lesbian.
In a dissenting opinion, Chief Justice Ahment Ulucak disagreed with that assessment. ``Yasar Huseyin Yardimci didn’t defend himself while committing this crime therefore the judgment should be accordingly.`` he said.
KAOS GL, a leading LGBT organization in Turkey, asked the government to lift the reduction in the punishment of crimes committed against gays-lesbians such as usurpation, attacks, injury or murder. The new Penal Law, which is due to take effect on April 1, 2005, does not provide any protection for gays and lesbians.
