Catholic nun honored for work with gays
An international group has recognized a Roman Catholic nun for her pioneering outreach to gays.
Jeannine Gramick, a Sister of Loretto, this week will receive the Santa Claus Peace Prize in Antalya, Turkey, during the 23rd International Activities for World Peace. The organization’s theme for 2005 is “Sexual Identities: The Path to Peace.” Registered in Turkey in 1996, the Santa Claus Foundation promotes love around the world.
Gramick co-founded New Ways Ministry in 1977 with a focus on justice and education for gay Catholics until the Vatican ordered her to cease the outreach. The award commends her “memorable attempt” to proclaim that gay people can live “an authentically Christian life,” and for her perseverance despite opposition to her ministry.
