Searching for Solution on the Field of Gay – Lesbian Human Rights
Most of the human rights movement organizations in Turkey don’t pay enough attention to the problems of homosexuals. Sadly, it is also almost impossible to see any reference in the reports of Turkish public organizations and NGO’s about opression against homosexuals in Turkey. Most people still don’t have a clear opinion about violence and discrimination against homosexuals. Current Turkish laws that ban discrimination doesn’t give any reference about the violence and discrimination against homosexuals.
Gay individuals almost have no right on the legal arena. Furthermore, gays and lesbians have no idea about what they can/can’t legally do against the violence and discrimination. They also don’t know how to utilize the human rights organizations for this specific purpose. As a result of all these, the problems gay and lesbians experienced haven’t been put into the agenda and they continuously experience the violence and discrimination.
Kaos GL is going to realize a meeting in Diyarbakir, Ankara, Izmir, and Istanbul in order to come together with the gay and lesbian individuals and the human rights activists.
Providing a universal perspective towards gay and lesbian problems is the objective of this meeting. Besides “gay and lesbian rights are human rights” perspective is another aim. To give information to the human rights activists on gays and lesbians’ problems about the violence and discrimination they face will build a ground to study on a common base along with GLBT organizations, women rights organizations, human rights organizations and public organizations.
In this process, two results are expected. On one hand gays and lesbians can motive themselves to get their rights; on the other hand the violence and discrimination against homosexuals may be a vital part of human rights agenda. Finding solutions will be a main focus during the seminars. Preparing a “gay and lesbian human rights report” about Turkey is still on going and this seminar will help a great deal to improve it.
